82' yamaha seca turbo (turbo removed) questions... |
Lead | |
|
hey you guys i have been reading your forums and it seems as though you are a pretty informative bunch of fellows! I reciently picked up this seca turbo on a
trade and let me tell you, its far from stock. The turbo and anything related has been gutted from existance except of course the turbo boost guage lol. The
exhaust has also been slightly modified to fit a single tuned muffler on the right hand side. Mechanicly it seems pretty sound and starts and runs fairly well
but i am a little concerned... I hear there is an electric fuel pump, well mine doesn't appear to have one (gravity only baby!), the carbs seem to be
original (per prev post's decriptions) with add-on individual cone air filters, and the crankcase breather hose was still hooked to the stock air box but
is missing all other items to seal it from the atmosphire. I am wondering since the carbs are designed to be presurised will this cause a performance issue
severe enough to cause intermitant back firing on deceleration from the carbs and loss of power on accel from a stop? I am a master auto tech but this is my
first motorcyle with no prior experience in repairing them. I can only relate to my prior experience with auto's that there probably is some modifications
that this machine is lacking. The only items i have replaced so far are the carb intake boots since they were so cracked (only to find that the cracks were
only external!). I have already put over 200 miles on the bike and am pretty happy with normal operation but would like more reasurence there is not any
simple or cost efective modifications i can perform to make it virtually seemless for the rest of this ridding season. If you have seen the pic i posted, yes
the previous owner put triumph stickers on it lol. Sorry for the lengthy discription and many questions but any help at this point would be AWESOME!!

Ah yes I remember seeing this bike on Ebay, or maybe craigslist? I have no clue how to go about tuning a turbo bike to run N/A, I would assume it could be done
but performance will be sub-par to a regular 650 maxim or seca.....With the pods you might need different jets, running lean? plugs white? The Turbo carbs have
smaller jets for cylinders 2&3(27.5), larger for 1&4(32.5).....maybe you could throw some Hitachi's on there from a N/A 650 and be alright. To make
the bike seamless, I would get the tidbits to make it boost again....where do you live? if your nearby it's always better to see it in person, I live in NW
Ohio and plan on attending the AMA mid-ohio vintage days later this month if maybe your going. -Nick

yes it was on craigslist, yes it has been re-jetted per the prev owner. i live in waukegan, il which is 50 or so miles north of chicago. i would like to
re-turbo it but dont want to spend all the money on that this season. i have not removed the plugs to check them but they were just replaced prior to me
getting the bike. i'll have to pull them out soon but i am focusing on re-paintng the skins at the moment and it is something i'm not a pro at so its
almost been a week and i can say i'm 75% finished thank goodness. i will have to try and hit up the show but doubt i'll make it this go round. where
is the show stationed? I am content with the current power the bike has being naturally asperated, however non-turbo carbs are most likely my solution
according to your input. yu have some laying around collecting dust that you want to sell for a fair price?
thanks again, was wondering if anyone would give me the time of day lol |

Mid-Ohio is located near Lexington Ohio, here is the site if your curious http://www.midohio.com/Schedule/AMA-Vintage-Motorcycle-Days I don't really have
anything in worthy condition to sell, but Ebay i'm sure does. It might cost you a little over $100 for some Hitachi's, airbox and carb-to-motor
boots....or maybe just ride the season out and dream of the boost while saving a little $$?? I've often wondered how the Turbo's motor performance was
past the 6000 rpm mark with no turbo, just like how you probably wonder what it's like to have one lol.......Good luck with the painting, I'm sure you
will have a nice looking Turbo (with no turbo) here soon! -Nick

man it looks like a cool event! i wish i could go but i already have plans for that weekend. The seca has decient power without the turbo and still likes the
higher rpms. i do feel a different animal around 7,000 rpm's where it starts to come alive. i rode it with 4 other bikes and the smallist was a 900cc and
i caught up to them within a decient amount of time on a shotgun start, of course after they let off the throttle at about 100 mph lol.
I pulled a spark plug and it looks normal with slight carbon discoloration so i'm sure she is not running lean. However, i did decide to try and start the bike yesturday and it cranks but won't fire. I checked the fuses to find them extremely hot and with the incorrect amp and length fuses. I tried cleaning the contacts but a couple of them broke due to corrosion. I cut and soldiered female spade terminals in thier place to alow for newer style fuses but still no start. I pulled a plug again to find that it wasn't getting any fuel because it was dry. (Remember i don't have a fuel pump) I jiggled the petcock and tried again, still no start but a little fuel was now on the spark plug and some residue of fuel was on the petcock housing. i think i may have a problem, what do you suggest? Thanks, Jon |

buddy of mine with a bike tells me that my plugs are fouled yesturday after i pulled them all out. i'm not getting good spark and sometimes none at all
even after cleaning! when i put a small screw driver to the ignition wire and rest it near a ground source i get spark every time. i have power to the coils
and pulsating ground when the engine is spun over. i have power at the ignition key switch from a red wire and brownish one. there are 2 white with red
stiped wires that i have no negative or positive at any time at the switch and can't figure out thier purpose. The kill switch is also functioning
properly. How powerfull of a spark is required to pop this beast off? i have worked on lawn mowers that have produced a more vibrant spark than the small blue
spark coming from this one.
